Utilities Project Manager Overview
NC Associates are working with a market leading organisation based in South Manchester who are looking to recruit a Utilities Project Manager for a 6 month contract to help support the transition of the utilities from the outsourced utilities management company to a fully owned, technology-powered, and profit-enabling utilities set up within the organisation.
The project’s goal is to deliver cost control, data mastery, operational efficiency, and scalability across electricity, gas, water, and renewables. The current phase focuses on implementing a new Target Operating Model (TOM) and deploying the EnergyCAP application, enabling automation, integration, and robust reporting. This transition is expected to unlock significant operational savings, improve data quality, and establish a scalable platform for future growth.
Utilities Project Manager Duties
- Project Leadership: Lead the end-to-end delivery of the utilities TOM and EnergyCAP application implementation, ensuring seamless transition from the current outsourced provider with minimal disruption to business operations.
- Stakeholder Management: Engage with senior leadership (SLT/ELT), utilities, finance, tech, and third-party vendors to align project objectives, manage expectations, and ensure effective communication.
- Planning & Mobilisation: Develop and maintain detailed project plans, timelines, and resource allocations. Oversee project governance, risk management, and reporting.
- Process & Change Management: Map and embed new processes, drive adoption of new systems, and support change management activities to ensure smooth operational transition.
- Data Migration & Quality: Oversee data extraction, cleansing, migration, and validation from legacy systems to EnergyCAP, ensuring data integrity and audit-readiness. You will be expected to demonstrate how you have managed operational data and systems transitions in previous roles—planning, executing, and embedding new ways of working.
- Testing & Go-Live: Coordinate system configuration, user acceptance testing (UAT), training, and go-live activities. Ensure robust handover to business-as-usual (BAU) teams.
- Performance Tracking: Monitor project KPIs (e.g., invoice validation, recharge efficiency, data completeness), report on progress, and drive continuous improvement.
- Risk & Issue Management: Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and issues, particularly around change management, system integration, and resource readiness. Apply a structured approach to risk identification and mitigation, with particular focus on data migration and operational handover.
- Digital Transformation: Lead the digital transformation journey by ensuring that new systems and processes are not only implemented but also fully embedded and operationalised to deliver tangible business value.
Utilities Project Manager Experience Required
- Proven experience as a Project Manager delivering complex transformation projects, ideally within utilities, energy, or facilities management sectors.
- Strong track record of leading technology implementations (preferably SaaS platforms like EnergyCAP or similar).
- Highly Desirable experience with Microsoft Dynamics – Finance & Operations (F&O) integrations.
- Demonstrable experience in process mapping, change management, and stakeholder engagement across business and technical teams.
- Solid understanding of utilities operations, billing, data management, and regulatory/compliance requirements.
- Experience with data migration, system integration, and user training.
- Evidence of successfully managing operational data and systems transitions, including the planning, execution, and embedding of new processes and technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to identify project risks and implement effective mitigation strategies, particularly during major system or process changes.
- Experience in leading digital transformation initiatives, ensuring that technology adoption results in sustainable operational improvements.
- Excellent organisational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Project management certification (e.g., PRINCE2, PMP, Agile) is highly desirable.
Type of Person Required
- Delivery-Focused: Results-driven, able to work at pace and deliver against tight deadlines in a high-complexity environment.
- Collaborative: Strong interpersonal skills, able to build relationships and influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Analytical: Comfortable working with data, systems, and processes; able to identify issues and drive solutions.
